SURFING
Wales has some of the best surfing in the UK set in the clear, clean waters of Pembrokeshire National Park, the Gower and Lleyn peninsulas....... just don't tell anyone.......
After looking at a map of Wales it's unsurprising to see why we get such great surf. Anyone who knows ocean knows the formula:
A country's coastline facing 3 different waves + a predominantly south westerly wind = one massive overabundance of waves (if there could be such a thing!). Take the square root of that, multiply it by 10 shots of adrenaline, divide by a percentage of local and cultural experiences and you've one surf trip that goes down in history.
Throw in our local knowledge and personal experience and passion for surfing and you're guaranteed to find the biggest and best and cleanest surf when those deep Atlantic swells come rolling in. Don't worry about the sea being too cold, in the summer the water is as warm as Bondi beach, we kit you out in a toasty warm steamer wetsuit, ensuring you'll be frolicking in the sea for hours.
Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park – Stunning rugged coastal scenery, clear blue water and beautiful isolated beaches. The county's coastline faces 3 different directions, meaning a very short drive to the best possible surf depending on wind and swell direction. Wales has more 'Blue Flag' beaches than any other in the UK, ensuring you'll be surfing in the cleanest waters. Some of the best beaches include
Freshwater West – Renowned surf location, where the Welsh national surf championships have been held. South west facing, the waves here will always be couple of feet bigger than other beaches.
Whitesands, St Davids – There are some awesome clean waves to be found in this west facing beach.........but you'll have to find it first.
The Gower Peninsula – Chosen as the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty back in 1956, the Gower is home to some legendary surf. Facing southwest and catching the best of the Atlantic swell, we'll show you some great surf spots, for both beginners and experienced surfers alike. Some of the best breaks include –
Llangennith – A great south–west facing beach, offering a superbly consistent and reliable beach break.
Rhoshilli – West facing bay catching the best of the swell. The Worm's Head Promontory offers protection from the wind, allowing some classic waves and surf.
North Wales and the Lleyn Peninsula – The beaches are less crowded than their southern counterparts, but are home to some equally great surf. Amongst the famous breaks is the 'Mouth'
Hell's mouth – Facing south west and picking up any swell that going, it's an extremely consistent spot. The far corner of the beach even holds some hollow barrels for the more advanced surfers.
