Sustainability
The Legendary Welsh Adventure Co. - "Talking the Talk"
True sustainable tourism is more than ecological sustainability and environmental conservation. It's a new attitude to understanding and balancing the 'triple bottom line' of social, environmental, and economic needs now and into the future.
The Legendary Welsh Adventure Co. is passionate in creating a long-term vision that holistically considers the elements of sustainable business operation. Elements such as: meeting visitor expectations, managing environmental performance and protection, and engaging local communities.
Equally as important, is that we must remain dynamic, flexible, and adaptable in our ability to be innovative with new ways of decision making and resource allocation. Who knows where we'll be 50 years from now? ...
The Legendary Welsh Adventure Co. - "Walking the Walk"
Action – LWAC is dedicated to forging relationships with local inns, restaurants and suppliers in small villages, rural communities, and urban centers. It is important for us to support authentic businesses by authentic people, who are invested in the future of where they live – businesses much like ourselves.
Action – Instead of staying in large foreign–owned all–inclusive resorts or hotel chains, we aim to support the local economy by staying in small–scale hotels where possible, otherwise the best feasible option is employed.
Action – LWAC employs local guides, suppliers and operators in the destinations we travel to generate local employment in the tourism industry and connected commerce industries. This growth is also amplified through the businesses we work with.
Action – To optimize our contribution to Wales on a whole, LWAC tours are geographically diverse, taking advantage of the environmental and cultural assortment of the entire country. We feel the experience of where you are is equally as important as what you are doing, and this spreads benefit to both our customers and the numerous areas we visit. So more than one National Park receives increased awareness, more than one town has the chance to welcome, and you get more than one snapshot of an entire country.
Action – LWAC strives to enhance cultural awareness for our customers through education of the cultural activities, sites, and customs in the areas we visit and meaningful connections with local people. This education results in a heightened cultural awareness and authentic experiences that protects historical and cultural foundations.
Action – incorporating UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Areas of Outstanding National Beauty into our tours.
Action – LWAC believes it is important to preserve and conserve our natural and non-renewable resources for future generations. To help, we donate £1 from every customer on every tour to support the work of The Woodland Trust to help make a difference.
Action – LWAC maintains smaller group sizes to limit the potential adverse impacts on the environment. This is extended to all land-based and water-based activities.
Action – LWAC offsets its carbon emissions from our minibus by planting native trees in the natural areas we tour. Our realistic aim is not carbon neutrality, but impact reduction.
Action – It is important that the suppliers we use and the businesses we recommend are equally as dedicated to a sustainable tourism industry, and LWAC screens them for this purpose. Alongside overall value, cleanliness, and authenticity, we consider water and electricity usage, recycling, and overall environmental policy.
Action – LWAC purchases local and organic produce whenever possible for our snacks and gourmet lunches. We also provide fair trade tea and coffee.
Action – To hire and train our tour leaders accordingly; ensuring they receive:
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Low-impact travel practice training
- Mountain Bike Leader Award (for mountain bike specific tours)
- Mountain Leader Award (for trekking specific tours)
- BSA Surf Instructor with NARS Beach Lifeguard qualification (for surfing specific tours)
Action – Although simple, one of the most effective approaches to waste reduction is recycling. LWAC recycles all office paper and leaflets to reduce landfill waste.
Action – Marketing can be a huge burden on the environment. For this reason LWAC has chosen to encourage email communication and digital files for dossiers, receipts, and the like whenever possible. For situations where printed brochures and dossiers are required, we use paper that is 100% chlorine free and at least 50% recycled/ FSC certified.
Action – Similar to our efforts to preserve Welsh culture, LWAC strives to achieve the same with natural awareness and respect for the local ecosystem of wildlife and vegetation. This education supports an authentic respect and responsible enjoyment of the natural environment.
Action – LWAC fully supports the Welsh government's recent shift to promote Wales' natural resources alongside its cultural strengths. Known has having more castles per square inch than any other country in the world, Wales is now showcasing its outstanding and world class parks, coastal areas, and activity based centers. We are incredibly excited to align ourselves with this innovate approach to Welsh tourism, and are excited to see how the world is caught off guard when it sees what Wales has been hiding for thousands of years!
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Public transport – Since all trains and planes lead to London (or most of them anyway), consider using public transport to get to either of our pick-up locations. Often, this can be more relaxing and affordable, and occasionally you'll even get there faster than driving!
Buy local – Local economic support is an integrative aspect to a thorough sustainable platform. Before and during the trip, consider purchasing your supplies from local shops that not only offer authentic products, but an authentic experience that you won't get from home.
Don't litter – sounds simple, and it is. Whatever you bring with you, make sure you have it when you leave. Minimizing negative impacts of tourism through pollution prevention is one of the easiest ways to help.
Respect the culture All cultures are distinctive, some strikingly different than others. This is one of the best parts about traveling. Leave your inhibitions on the train and experience the differences; embrace the unfamiliarity, enjoy the people and traditions and above all, learn more than you could ever bring back in a keychain. After all, isn't it why you came to visit in the first place?
